On a recent work trip to Bangalore, I was armed with my camera to also play the role of a style ninja. I was visiting various large tech firms as a part of my day job and meeting Strategy & Marketing heads. I was hoping to spot well dressed women across the plush campuses. Pardon my cheekiness, but I spotted exactly one! No picture unfortunately, as she was my prospect 🙂
We got a lot of mail from our readers requesting for our take on work wear. Personally, I feel you don’t have to be headed for a meeting to look chic at work, so I’m writing a series covering how to wear skirts, picking the right trousers, importance of layering with blazers and cardigans, moving from manly shirts to feminine blouses and incorporating color at work.
I think skirts are fantastic at work. When worn right, they are crisp and feminine and can go from work to play!
Here I’ve put together a little know how about skirts and couple a few tips to make them work for various shapes/sizes.
To start with, recognize your body type
Once you know your shape, here are quick tid bits about skirts that may work for you..
Invest in a basic black skirt, choosing the type of skirt that will suit your body. Here are a few ideas to make different outfits, that will make you look professional and fabulous at work!
An A-Lined black skirt is a great investment, you can pair it with everything that is ‘in’ during the season.
Look 1: black and white stripes are making the round this season. Try some other geometric print instead & don’t forget to add color in the form of a cardigan or a bright neck piece.
Look 2: This season, I see a lot of neon and bird prints – Take the trend to work!
Look 3: Ikat is a personal favorite and works well with a basic black.
The fit is everything in a skirt.
1. Ensure that the skirt sits on your waist and does not bite into your skin. A skirt that is tight on the waist will make a prominent bulge.
2. Pay attention to how the skirt fits on your bottom, it should accentuate & flatter your curves, not hide them. Something that goes straight from the waist to the knee will only make your behind look bigger.
3. Always, ALWAYS wear a thong or boy shorts inside a skirt. Nothing uglier than panty lines on show!
4. Lastly, when it comes to office wear a good blazer goes a long way. Blazers are no longer only meant for meetings. Keep yourself cozy, yet stylish in the freezing office temperatures!
I hope you enjoyed this post and are inspired to don skirts to work. Would love your feedback, ideas and even your own outfit pictures. Send them to firstname.lastname@example.org. You could drop us a note on our Facebook page or Tweet to us @ModaNinja!
