I spent a week in Kolkata earlier this month working out of the Netscribes office on Park Street ( did I ever tell you I about my day job as a sales manager at NS?) .Park Street is said to be the busiest and hippest street in Kolkata :). ‘Hip-ness’ notwithstanding, I was overwhelmed by the warmth extended to me from the team. Three things I loved about Kolkata
- the food
- shopping and
- the women!
I had the most delicious Bengali cuisine served up to me each day at lunch! Oh the fish & mustard, my mouth’s watering at the thought of it! I did come back with two big bottle of mustard so I don’t miss it too much.
I was told the shopping is insane. However; I was there only through the week , I did not find the time to shop at leisure. I did however pick up beautiful cutwork bedcovers and even more beautiful katha work kurties. The shoes and bags at BK market are seriously cool. I got teal loafers and a soft leather bag – at an unheard of rate! I obviously have a Kolkata hangover & decided to pay tribute to the lovely women I met there. Strong, beautiful and intelligent – that’s the Bengali woman.
Here is a picture of the beautiful goddess Durga. This was taken while I went pandal hopping in Kolkata. The scale of the pandals and the overall celebrations are absolutely breathtaking.
We had Dussehra celebrations at the Netscribes, Mumbai office and I donned on a mustard colored salwar kameez, I could not do the eyes as dark as them as I’d end up looking gothic rather than pretty – but I did paint on the symbolic red bindi! Here’s how I looked
I did not dare wear red to office, so had a smaller black one on during the day.
I will be happy to share tips on where to head while in Kolkata :). Let me know what you thought of my take on a traditional Bengali get up. Don’t forget to Like us on Facebook & keep a track of all things new by following us on Twitter.
PS: Mustard Salwar Kameez is from a Silk Expo at Sonal Hall, Pune – Glass bangles are from there too.
The neck piece, which is quite versatile (I wore it with a white shirt once) is from Fab India (impulse buy at the Delhi airport :p).
