Are you tired of body con outfits yet? Good news is, designers globally have been embracing gender bending, anti-fit outfits for a few seasons now. Not to say that we have anything against a well fitted outfit or even body con for that matter, but some days it’s nice to be dressed in airy tees, dresses and pants. Androgynous fashion blurs the line between gender specific clothing and doesn’t need to be separated by gender. Though over the years boyfriend trend has been popular, this January the Gucci runway had ambiguous outfits featuring massive pussycat bow blouses, shrunken jackets, and low-slung, wide-leg trousers—on willowy models with matching soft features and lengthy, undone hair. Gender-neutral dressing is gaining popularity as designers and brands are creating unisex lines.
When I first saw this trend, I was a little skeptical about giving it a shot. Like Karl Lagerfeld said, ‘Trendy is the last stage before tacky’. Given that I’m petite, I felt like I’d look like I was wearing a sack. But the allure of androgynous fashion, comfort and trying something new was too strong for me to ignore.
When in Mumbai this earlier this year, Sneaky Ninja introduced me to designer and overall awesome human, Manish Bansal. Manish’s forte is menswear and he recently opened his flagship store in Shahpur Jat, New Delhi. His first summer resort unisex collection titled Friends And Fences, sets-forth a unisex range that embodies an exuberant youth like vibe, read a statement. With a colour palette of indigo, white and faun which relates to the “New Age” – the ability to use the higher mind to choose friendship over fences. Needless to say both Sneaky and I, fell in love with the use of traditional Indian embroidery techniques to create fresh new art-works of fences with certain rawness to it. The relaxed fit & androgyny of the pieces are perfect gender bender.
If you plan to try out this trend, here are a few ideas on how
- Try a dress first: If you are comfortable in dresses, this may be the easiest way to try the anti fit trend, without the hassle of thinking of what to pair individual pieces with. Try a tee shirt dress like Sneaky Ninja did. The idea is to let the dress be the highlight and not fuss too much with accessories. Of course that doesn’t apply to us, we like OTT 😀 Pair it with brogues, combat booties or sneakers to complete your gender bending outfit.
- Oversized tee: Boyfriend jeans have been around forever, so have boyfriend jackets and shirts. How about a boyfriend tee now, wear with skinnies or a pair of shorts to balance out the fit. Of course, if you dare, pair it with a pair of wide leg pants or culottes like Cheeky Ninja
- Mixing fit and anti-fit – Wear your dad or boyfriend’s shirt with a belt clinched at the waist or sweat shirts with a fitted skirt so you don’t look like a sack.
- Accesssorise: If you are scared to experiment with androgynous clothes you could begin with androgynous shoes like oxfords with dresses instead of wedges or a bowtie with a fitted shirt.
